Curriculum Spotlight: Anger Management

Anger is a universal emotion that we all experience. However, when not properly managed, anger can lead to impulsive decisions and destructive behaviors that impact not only the individual but their families and communities as well. At NCTI, we understand that effective anger management isn’t about suppressing emotions—it’s about developing the skills to channel them constructively.

The Crossroads® Approach to Anger Management

Our newly updated Crossroads: Anger Management curriculum is designed to give participants an opportunity to practice skills that allow them to positively control their behavior and the events in their lives. Through activity-enhanced components, individuals learn to successfully regulate their emotions and direct their energies in a positive direction.

What makes our approach different? The Crossroads curriculum isn’t just about education—it’s about transformation. By integrating evidence-based methodologies with an interactive learning process, participants develop practical skills they can apply immediately in real-world situations.

Risk-Responsive Programming

Understanding that each person’s needs differ, our Anger Management curriculum is tailored to address high, medium and low risk levels with curriculum for youth and adults ranging from 8 hours to 38 hours of content.

This tiered approach aligns with evidence-based practices by ensuring participants receive the appropriate level of intervention based on their specific needs—not too little, not too much.

The Real Colors® Advantage

A standout feature of our Anger Management curriculum is the integration of Real Colors®, NCTI’s personality temperament instrument. This powerful tool helps participants understand their own temperament style and how it influences their anger responses.

By incorporating temperament theory, the curriculum offers a personalized learning experience for each participant. When individuals understand what motivates their own behavior and the behavior of others, they gain invaluable insight into their anger triggers and patterns.

For example, someone with a dominant Blue temperament might react strongly to perceived betrayal or disrespect in relationships, while someone with a dominant Gold temperament might experience anger when rules are broken or expectations aren’t met. Understanding these differences allows facilitators to help participants develop customized strategies for managing their specific anger triggers.

Key Learning Objectives

Through the Anger Management curriculum, participants will:

  • Understand the process of changing negative behavior
  • Discover how attitudes affect behavior
  • Establish goal-directed behavior patterns
  • Learn techniques to control attitudes and emotions
  • Gain skills in personal responsibility, financial management, interpersonal relationships, job readiness and self-improvement
  • Utilize the Personal Awareness Journal® for ongoing reflection and growth

Building Skills for Lasting Change

What truly sets this curriculum apart is its focus on structured skill building for real-world application. Participants are challenged to utilize the skills they learn in group to practice ways to respond different to triggering situations. Additionally, the embedded homework assignments ensure that learning extends beyond the classroom, while the connection between criminogenic risk and need factors helps participants understand the relationship between anger management and other areas of their lives.

Available in both English and Spanish, the Anger Management curriculum exemplifies NCTI’s commitment to providing accessible, evidence-based solutions for behavior change.
