The Gap Between Knowing and Doing
You know the model. You can explain the Primary Colors. You can talk about Real Colors clearly and skillfully facilitate it. And yet, in real life, and sometimes even in the training space, you still find yourself falling back into the same patterns— the same old behaviors, the same old language.
Most of us have experienced watching ourselves do something we know we shouldn’t do. We can almost see it happening and still not stop it. In those moments, we aren’t really choosing. We’re on autopilot. We’re defaulting.
By “default,” we mean the automatic, well-rehearsed response you use under stress, pressure, emotion, or speed. Not the response you would choose with time and space, but the one that appears when you are tired, triggered, or rushed.
Most facilitators eventually realize a humbling truth: insight does not automatically lead to behavior. Understanding your Color and your patterns does not ensure you will act intentionally in the moments that matter most.
In this Real Colors Facilitator Roundtable, we will examine the gap between knowing and doing. We will speak honestly about what causes us to go on autopilot, what helps us stay in choice, and how we develop the ability to be more intentional with our language and actions in the moment. This will be a reflective, experience-based conversation focused on real behavior, not theory.
If you have ever looked back on a moment and thought, “I was on autopilot there,” this conversation is for you. Come compare notes with other experienced facilitators and leave with a few ideas to think about and try.
Objectives
By the end of this roundtable, participants will:
- Clarify what “default” and “autopilot” look like in their own behavior
- Reflect on the difference between automatic reactions and intentional responses
- Explore what conditions make it harder or easier to stay in choice
- Examine how different Colors tend to go on autopilot under pressure
- Surface practical, in-the-moment ways facilitators return to choice
- Leave with one small, realistic shift to practice in real time
