What Becomes Possible When Facilitators Get Curious

You ask the question. A participant starts answering. And before they have even finished, you already know where they are going. Or do you?

The more familiar we become with Real Colors, the easier it is to anticipate what participants will say. We recognize the patterns, know the common examples, and may already be thinking about what we want to say next. But sometimes the most interesting part of an answer is the part we didn’t expect. Hearing it requires us to stop anticipating and start listening.

In this Real Colors Round Table Discussion, we’ll put that skill to work. We’ll listen to real-world participant responses, notice what makes us curious, and challenge ourselves to come up with the question we would ask next. We’ll also explore the “payoff question,” a follow-up that can take a conversation beyond what someone does and help uncover why it matters. Along the way, we’ll see how different questions can take the same conversation in very different directions.

Come ready to listen, get curious, and ask some questions.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Recognize how listening and curiosity can create opportunities for deeper participant learning and discovery.
• Turn what they hear in a participant’s response into relevant follow-up questions.
• Use payoff questions to help participants explore why a behavior, preference, or experience matters.
• Decide when another question could deepen the learning and when it is time to move on.
